Authorities on Wednesday confirmed that a large amount of a liquid chemical fertilizer spilled in the Ohio River at Cincinnati, potentially threatening drinking water and aquatic life.

But there was no immediate risk to drinking water in Louisville.

And Louisville Water Co. spokeswoman Kelley Dearing Smith said the company was confident in its ability to deal with what could be coming its way.

“We have a lot of history in dealing with ammonia levels in the Ohio River so, at this time, we feel good about maintaining water quality and handling this issue at the treatment plant so that there are no issues for customers,” Dearing Smith said.
